The day following the Mohls’ return from Las Vegas, Mireille took a job selling cosmetics in a department store.

She made a deal with Victor: since she had no money to her name, she would remain in the Brentwood house to cook and clean for him until she could save enough to leave. And when they divorced, she would make no claims on him.

In exchange, Victor was never to touch her again. Mireille got a lock and a bolt, and put them on the door to the guest bedroom. There she lived as if she were in an apartment, eating sparingly and alone, meeting Victor only when their proximity to one another in the house demanded it.

She took the money, counted out the month’s rent and the money owed to the landlord, and threw the rest on the floor. “I’ll mail this,” she said.

So they had a place to stay for another month.

When Mireille got home from work, Victor was waiting with a bottle of chilled champagne. “Honey,” he said excitedly. “Sit down. I’ve got something to show you.”

She groaned. “Please, I’m very tired—”

“Take a look at this!” With a look of childlike triumph, he handed her a stiff white card. It was bordered in gold, and printed in the center were the words:
